My favourite noodle spots in Hong Kong

There’s just something about a warm bowl of soup noodles – it’s the ultimate comfort food, especially during the winter.

As a Hong Konger, and having recommended these noodle spots to many friends, I hope you will enjoy these too.

Disclaimer: This is by no means a comprehensive list of “best” noodle spots in Hong Kong – these are my personal favourites.

Top favourites

If you only have time to visit one or two restaurants out of the eight recommended here, here are my top top recommendations:

Wonton (餛飩) noodle restaurants

Samdor noodles (三多麵食)

This place is my favourite because they have all sorts of local favourites beyond the shrimp wontons. They have pork and vegetable wontons (my go-to dish), octopus balls, fishballs, beef brisket, and more!

You could also choose between the different types of noodles, which are: thick egg noodles, thin noodles, and white flat noodles (河粉).

Snacks also include: deep fried wontons; fried chicken wings; boiled vegetables.

In short: Best spot for pork and vegetable wontons

Tsim Chai Kee Noodle (Wellington Street Central) (沾仔記 (威靈頓街))

This is my favourite spot for traditional prawn wontons and also for their fish balls.

Opposite the very famous Mak’s Noodles (recommended by the late great Anthony Bourdain), Tsim Chai Kee Noodle offers a (much more) satisfying wonton noodle experience.

They offer basically a few items – which include prawn wontons, beef brisket and fish balls. And they do it well – in fact, this menu has been working so well that they don’t even offer different types of noodles! Fair play!

If you are around in Central and crave for prawn wontons, go no further than Tsim Chai Kee.

In short: Best in Central for prawn wontons

Wing Kee Snack Shop (榮記潮洲粉麵)

Having studied in this area, this was a regular spot for me whenever I craved for prawn wonton noodles. Their menu features the usual prawn wontons, fishballs and other wonton shop staples, as well as different types of noodles.

As Wing Kee Noodles is located away from the central business / commercial district of Hong Kong, the dishes are more affordable while not skimping on quality. If you are in the area, say, I would recommend coming here for a bowl of noodles.

In short: Best in Sai Wan (Western part of Hong Kong) for prawn wontons

Trusty Congee King (靠得住粥麵小館)

I was in the area getting my fortune told next door at the world famous Wong Tai Sin temple and the excitement was too much – I had to seek out some comfort food. Tucked away in a shopping mall in a mostly residential neighbourhood, there was a Michelin-recommended congee and noodle shop with a wide variety of dishes on offer. These include all sorts of congee, dimsum (like cheung fun – rice rolls) and main dishes like dry-stir fried beef flat noodles.

My friend and I ordered the beef brisket noodles and wonton noodle soup. The broth was so flavourful and the beef brisket and wontons were scrumptious.

I have yet to try their congee – what they are most famous for. If you have tried it, I would love to hear your thoughts.

In short: Best surprising find – Michelin recommended congee and wonton noodle shop

General recommendations

Noodleholic (麵館皇)

  • Area: Causeway Bay
  • Address: G/F, 32 Tang Lung Street, Causeway Bay
  • My usual order: Pork soft bone knife cut noodles with Chinese herbal soup base; or pork ribs in vinegar knife cut noodles with Chinese herbal soup base.

This is my go-to spot for “knife cut” noodles (刀削麵) – a particular type of Chinese noodles with a thick middle and thinner sides to the noodle. Usually it is served in soup with some sort of side dish (the “main”).

I love the texture of knife cut noodles and quite strangely (or not so strangely) they are not too common in Hong Kong – likely due to the fact it is a Northern dish.

Noodleholic has a wide variety of main dishes to go with the noodles – which I believe are mainly Shanghainese. You may then specify to have knife cut noodles with it (add HK$3). They even recently added a coriander-based knife cut noodle – I highly recommend a try!

Another unique aspect of this spot is that most of the soup noodle/main dishes come with a healthy Chinese traditional medicine soup base that is both nutritious and tasty!

Tip: these come in steaming hot pots that keep the heat in. I usually ask for an extra bowl to spoon the soup and noodles in to cool it down a little.

In short: Best knife cut noodles on Hong Kong Island

King noodle (麵皇自家麵)

  • Area: Central
  • Address: G/F, 61 Wellington Street, Central
  • My usual order: For soup noodles – if i’m feeling really hungry, wide noodles with pork and leek dumplings (with soup) with a side of pork bone. If not too hungry, then beef with soup noodles (wide noodles). For mixed noodles – chicken mixed noodle with wide noodles.

This non-descript noodle restaurant in the central business / commercial district of Hong Kong offers a variety of Northern Chinese noodle dishes.

For soup noodles, you can choose from a large range of “mains” (e.g. chicken, beef, and pork soft bone) and then pair it up with their choice of noodle types (e.g. wide, thin, thick, etc).

For mixed noodles, these are chicken, beef or vegetable mixed with some noodles in a delicious creamy sesame sauce.

I also love their dumplings with a really yummy vinegar dipping sauce with chilis and garlic.

In short: Best spot for both soup noodles and mixed noodle dishes

A One Pork Chop Noodles  (阿一豬扒酸辣米線)

I only really come here for one dish – and it’s the pork chop noodles.

Sometimes you just want something very substantial and warm and hearty, especially in the winter months. This hits the spot every time – this pork chop noodle dish has a good portion of pork chop, some boiled veggies, and Shanghainese thick noodles.

At the same time, this restaurant offers a variety of “mains”, including pork vegetable wontons, spicy chicken wings, and more.

In short: Best spot for noodles with a hearty “main” (the pork chop)

Northern Dumpling Yuan (北方餃子源)

  • Area: Wanchai (but also a chain with locations in Western, Mongkok, and Shau Kei Wan)
  • Address: G/F, 259 Queen’s Road East, Wan Chai
  • My usual order: Shredded Chicken Noodle or pork and leek boiled dumplings

Although famous for its dumplings (I recommend the pork and leek boiled dumplings), Northern Dumpling Yuan’s shredded chicken mixed noodle is what I go to when I want a filling, flavourful mixed noodle dish. This is a dish with shredded chicken, shredded cucumber and mung-bean noodle (low carb!) that is topped with a fragrant peanut chili sauce.

On a summer day, this is my go-to as it’s filling and delicious.

In short: best spot for shredded chicken and peanut sauce mixed noodle
